Clarification on EIA Notification
EXTRACT OF THE LETTER OF SHRI V.RAJAGOPALAN, JOINT SECRETARY,
MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT & FOREST
(D.O. No. Z-12011/32/2001-IA-III dated 12th November,2001)

                                 i.           As per the amendment dated 1st August, 2001 made in the EIA Notification, 1994, units to be located in Special Economic Zones do not require mandatory public hearing. In view of the same, projects like airport, port and power plant to be located in SEZ are exempted from mandatory public hearing.

                               ii.        NOC from State Pollution Control Board is a pre-requisite for obtaining environmental clearance and hence would need to be submitted.

                              iii.          Manufacture of leather products are not covered under the EIA Notification, 1994, however tanneries (raw skins and hides) would attract the provisions of the provisions of the EIA Notification.

                             iv.        Product of light engineering as such are not covered under the EIA Notification, 1994, however, if the activities involve electroplating, foundries, primary metallurgical industries, the relevant provisions of the EIA Notification, 1994 will be attracted. A complete list of projects requiring environmental clearance is given in schedule-1 of the EIA Notification.
